The Pop Duo of John (Vo) and Tommy (B), born in 1980, influenced by The Smiths and New Order, co-wrote with Michael (G), influenced by Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc., and Magic was born.
*John Kalodner, who revived Aerosmith and Journey, was the first newcomer to sign with the band after moving to Sony. “Michael and I come from very different worlds. He grew up on guitar rock like Aerosmith and Van Halen, and I listened to stuff like New Order and The Smiths. At the urging of a friend, John and Mike began working together and exchanging demos in the summer of 1997.
“When I first met John, he was already playing with Tommy (Gruber, Neve's bassist) and looking for other members. But as soon as I talked to them, it hit me and we started bouncing around fresh ideas. I had a gut feeling that we had the potential to make a great band together. I brought in drummer Brian Burwell, who I knew from the studio, and everything just fell into place. We didn't waste any time and started writing songs and gigging right away, and the reaction was amazing.” (Mike: G)
